Beach regulations

The beach is a recreational area that many people want to use. In order for this to run smoothly, a number of regulations are required. They were not designed to make life difficult for recreationalists. In fact, they allow for a large group of users to make undisturbed use of a safe and clean beach. The information signs placed at each dune transition display the following rules.

Guarded Beach Areas

Municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee, Ouddorp:

Pole 10.00 – 11.50 (North Beach and ‘t Flaauwe Werk Beach)

Pole 21.00 – 22.00 (De Brouw Beach on the Brouwersdam sea side)

Kites

Large controllable kites, buggies, and similar equipment (with two or more control lines) pose a danger to beachgoers. These kites are heavy and can make high-speed “emergency landings.” Anyone struck by such a projectile can suffer serious injuries. Use of these kites is strictly prohibited in the busiest areas of our beach. Near Natural High on the Brouwersdam (at the level of Center Parcs Port Zelande) and at the Bula beach pavilion, a large “kite” beach area is available. Always follow the zoning rules set by the municipality and consider your safety and that of others!

Drones

Anyone flying a drone must be aware of the laws and regulations. Flying a drone over people, such as on the beach, is not permitted. Flying over Natura 2000 areas is prohibited during the breeding season. See vliegjedroneveilig.nl and rijksoverheid.nl for more information.

Dogs

On the beaches near our lifeguard posts, dogs are not allowed during the daytime in the summer months. There are beach sections where dogs on a leash are permitted from May 1 to October 1 between 10:00 and 19:00, namely between beach/kilometer poles 11.50 and 21. See the map at the bottom of this page for details.

Horses

Horses are not allowed on any of the beaches from May 1 to October 1 between 10:00 and 19:00, except for horses used by the police.

Watercraft

In recent years, the use of fast watercraft, such as jet skis and personal watercraft, has increased along our coast. These pose a danger to swimmers and are a source of disturbance. Use of these watercraft is prohibited along our beaches: from the shoreline up to 100 meters into the sea. This means that launching from the beach and traveling 100 meters into the sea is forbidden—a launch ban is in effect.

Extreme Sports

For extreme sports such as windsurfing, kitesurfing, skimboarding, and hydro-discs, the Municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee has designated separate zones. Check the municipal information boards carefully for where it is allowed and not allowed. On the Brouwersdam, near the Brouw beach pavilion toward the work harbor, a special area for bathers and swimmers is designated. This zone is marked with yellow buoys. Performing the above extreme sports in this area is prohibited. Violations may result in official enforcement.

Motorized Vehicles

Cars, 4-wheel drive vehicles, tractors, motorcycles, mopeds, etc., are prohibited on the beach and in dune paths. Exceptions are made for authorized users such as the lifeguard service, police, and other agencies working on or near the beach. These vehicles are only used when necessary to minimize any inconvenience.

Nudity

Nudity is prohibited in all guarded beach areas.

Bicycles

Cycling on the beach is not allowed during the summer season between 10:00 and 19:00. On a crowded beach, cyclists pose a danger to other beachgoers.

Barbecue

According to the General Local Ordinance (APV) of the Municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee, making fires on the beach and in the dunes is prohibited. Barbecuing in the dunes is not allowed. Barbecuing on the beach is prohibited from 00:00 to 19:00.

Other Rules

  • Entering the dunes is prohibited, as they serve as sea defenses, water extraction, and breeding areas.

  • Be considerate of other beachgoers: no loud music, no swearing, and no fighting. Avoid causing disturbances and enjoy a pleasant day at the beach!

  • Digging deep holes on the beaches and near the dunes is extremely dangerous. The holes can collapse with serious consequences.

  • Be aware of rapidly rising water. If you are on a sandbank, bring yourself, your children, and other beachgoers to safety in time. Very strong currents form around sandbanks. Also, pay close attention to currents and large waves while swimming and bathing.

  • Exercise caution near groynes and do not swim there. Dangerous back currents can form around these structures.

  • Campfires are not allowed on the beaches. Be extremely careful when discarding cigarettes near the dunes, as fires can easily start in the dry summer conditions.

  • Camping or overnight stays on the beaches are prohibited. Police and enforcement officers will take official action if rules are broken.

  • Do not leave your trash on the beach. Use the provided bins or take your waste home.
